Introduction
The development of metro systems has become an important strategy for improving urban mobility and achieving sustainable urban development, particularly in large cities facing traffic congestion, environmental pressures, and increasing travel demand. Metro systems can improve accessibility, reduce dependence on private vehicles, and strengthen connections among major urban activity centers. However, metro stations should not be considered merely as transportation nodes for passenger transfer. They are also important urban spaces where movement, waiting, social encounters, service activities, and different forms of interaction occur. Therefore, the performance of metro stations depends not only on transportation efficiency but also on their spatial, environmental, functional, and sociological qualities. These characteristics can influence users’ perceptions of safety, comfort, accessibility, satisfaction, and willingness to use public transportation.
Spatial quality refers to the capacity of the physical and functional environment to provide appropriate conditions for safe, comfortable, legible, and efficient use, while sociological quality concerns the ability of the station environment to support social presence, interaction, perceived security, and positive experiences. Deficiencies in pedestrian access, spatial organization, facilities, environmental conditions, or surveillance may negatively affect users’ experiences even when a station performs efficiently within the transportation network. Consequently, an integrated evaluation of physical and social characteristics is necessary for creating responsive and user-oriented metro environments.
Mashhad, as a major Iranian metropolis with considerable daily travel demand, requires public transportation spaces capable of responding simultaneously to mobility, environmental, and social needs. Mellat Park Metro Station represents an important case because of its location, passenger use, and relationship with surrounding urban activities. Accordingly, this study aims to evaluate the spatial and sociological quality and efficiency of Mellat Park Metro Station and identify the factors associated with users’ perceptions of its performance.
Methodology
This study employed an applied, descriptive-analytical research design and was conducted at Mellat Park Metro Station in Mashhad. Data were collected through direct field observations and a questionnaire administered to station users. Field observations were used to examine the physical organization of the station, movement patterns, accessibility conditions, available facilities, and environmental characteristics, while the questionnaire provided the quantitative basis for assessing users’ perceptions.
The assessment framework included safety and perceived security, comfort, accessibility, physical conditions, facilities, environmental quality, and social interactions. These dimensions provided an integrated assessment extending beyond the transportation function of the station. The collected data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Descriptive statistics were applied to evaluate the general condition of the examined indicators, while inferential statistical analyses were used to investigate relationships among the dimensions and determine the relative importance of spatial and sociological factors. Statistical results were interpreted alongside field observations to provide a comprehensive understanding of station conditions.
Results and Discussion
The findings indicate that the overall spatial quality of Mellat Park Metro Station is generally acceptable, although several components require improvement. Safety, comfort, accessibility, environmental conditions, and the availability and quality of facilities emerged as important dimensions of users’ evaluations. The findings demonstrate that transportation performance alone is insufficient for explaining users’ overall perception of a metro station. Instead, users’ experiences are shaped by interactions between mobility requirements and the physical, environmental, and social characteristics of the station.
Accessibility was identified as an important component because station performance depends on convenient connections between the metro and surrounding urban spaces. Continuous pedestrian routes, appropriate access points, and clear spatial organization can facilitate movement and improve users’ experiences. Conversely, deficiencies in pedestrian accessibility and spatial organization may reduce the benefits associated with the station’s favorable position within the transportation network.
Safety and comfort also constituted important components of perceived quality. Appropriate surveillance, reduction of uncomfortable or poorly controlled spaces, and provision of suitable waiting and resting facilities can improve users’ perceptions. Environmental quality was similarly important because physical conditions, facilities, functional organization, and general environmental characteristics collectively influence satisfaction.
The results further indicate that physical and sociological qualities are interconnected. Environments characterized by comfort, perceived security, legibility, and appropriate opportunities for waiting and interaction can support positive social experiences. In contrast, poorly organized environments may reduce users’ willingness to remain in the station beyond the minimum period required for transportation. Thus, metro stations should be understood as urban public environments where transportation, spatial quality, and social experience intersect.
Based on the findings, improvement priorities include strengthening pedestrian accessibility, enhancing safety and surveillance, providing adequate seating and resting facilities, improving environmental conditions, and increasing spatial legibility and functional organization. These interventions can strengthen the relationship between the transportation role of the station and its function as an urban public space.
Conclusion
The study demonstrates that the quality and efficiency of Mellat Park Metro Station depend not only on its transportation function but also on its physical, environmental, functional, and sociological characteristics. Although the station benefits from its location and accessibility, several spatial and functional components require improvement. Pedestrian accessibility, safety, environmental quality, facilities, spatial organization, and opportunities for comfortable social presence deserve particular attention.
The main implication is that metro stations should be planned and managed as multifunctional urban spaces rather than merely as passenger-transfer facilities. Integrating transportation requirements with spatial design and sociological considerations can provide a stronger basis for improving user satisfaction and station efficiency. Context-sensitive interventions at Mellat Park Metro Station can enhance accessibility, comfort, safety, environmental quality, and social usability. More broadly, incorporating spatial and sociological quality into metro-station planning can contribute to sustainable, inclusive, and user-oriented public transportation environments in Mashhad.
